SEAFAIRER joins CINEA clustering event on advanced biofuels in Brussels

SEAFAIRER was represented at the Advanced Biofuels Clustering Event organised by CINEA – the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency in Brussels, where more than 30 Horizon Europe projects came together to exchange knowledge and strengthen collaboration on sustainable fuels for aviation, maritime and heavy road transport.

Representing the project, Daniel Pichler (Project Manager, DTU) took part in the event’s pitch and poster sessions, which provided a highly interactive setting for direct dialogue among projects working across the advanced biofuels value chain. For SEAFAIRER, the event offered an excellent opportunity to present the project’s core innovation approach and to share key results from its first 18 months.

Among the topics highlighted by SEAFAIRER were ongoing activities related to unit scale-up, as well as blending and co-processing, both of which are central to the project’s ambition to support the development of sustainable marine biofuels from biogenic residues. The event also underlined the value of structured cross-project exchange in accelerating progress across Europe’s advanced biofuels landscape, particularly at a time when stronger collaboration between sectors is becoming increasingly important for the scale-up and deployment of renewable fuel solutions.

A further highlight of the workshop was the presentation and discussion of key studies linked to the future uptake of advanced biofuels, including Mobilisation of industrial capacity building for advanced biofuels, delivered by BEST, Exergia and POLITO. The study brought an important market-oriented dimension to the event by examining the conditions needed to expand industrial production capacity for advanced biofuels in Europe. In doing so, it helped frame the technical progress of Horizon Europe projects within the wider challenge of moving promising innovations towards commercial-scale deployment. These insights added valuable market and implementation perspectives to the discussions and reinforced the importance of aligning research and innovation efforts with the broader industrial and policy framework needed to bring advanced biofuels to market.

Overall, the clustering event provided a strong platform for knowledge exchange, discussion of technical challenges, and the strengthening of links across the EU research and innovation community. SEAFAIRER is grateful to CINEA for hosting such a well-structured and inspiring event and looks forward to continuing these exchanges with fellow Horizon Europe projects working to advance sustainable fuel solutions across transport sectors.
