SEAFAIRER project partners DTU, FVTR and Tergy Sagava joined the 23rd International Conference on Renewable Mobility “Fuels of the Future 2026” at CityCube Berlin (19–20 January 2026) to exchange insights on the rapidly evolving renewable fuels landscape – including the future role of sustainable fuels for shipping.

At the conference, our project partners FVTR hosted an exhibition stand and presented project-related perspectives on biofuel readiness for maritime use, highlighting how systematic laboratory, component and engine compatibility testing can help de-risk market entry for emerging fuels.
The discussions across sectors underscored several key trends:
- Biofuels are gaining momentum, with e.g., drop-in bio-oil and competing alternatives such as biomethane seen as a near-term option for reducing fleet emissions.
- Ethanol is emerging as a strong candidate, with increasing attention on the resilience of global bioethanol supply chains.
- Competition between on-road, aviation and marine sectors is expected to shape fuel availability in the coming years.
- Waste-based fuels for maritime applications are rising in relevance, reflecting growing interest in scalable, circular feedstock pathways.
A central SEAFAIRER-related highlight was FVTR’s focus on recent results in collaboration with Fraunhofer UMSICHT, reflecting the project’s broader ambition to turn biogenic residues into drop-in marine biofuels.

Looking ahead, these themes will continue at FVTR’s Rostock Biofuels in Shipping Symposium (21 April 2026), where stakeholders will explore feedstocks, production processes, additives, standards, testing methods and real-world operational experience.
